Self-Service Kiosks: Is This Their Year?

While the financial industry has embraced kiosks — also known as banking kiosks or ATMs — for decades now, many more industries are now looking to reduce overhead in a similar way — retail and food service in particular. The use of self-service kiosks is becoming increasingly common to help minimize or reduce human interaction, which can, in turn, save on associated labor costs, as well as limit the potential for transmission of not just viruses like COVID-19, but also the common cold and influenza. Self-service kiosks are also used to improve quality outcomes by reducing common human errors.

Why are the retail and restaurant industries embracing kiosks?

Greater adoption of kiosks has grown out of a few different factors. One is that the Millennial generation is now in charge of many buying decisions; they’ve grown up with computers, and are in many cases more comfortable making purchases online or at points of purchase unassisted than they are with person-to-person interactions. They are also more likely to want to customize their orders in ways that are more easily transacted at a self-service kiosk than with human assistance (and often more accurate).

Another driving factor behind the shift toward self-service kiosks in these industries are the new minimum wage standards mandated by a number of state and city governments — $15 in New York, and $17 in Seattle, as the minimum for all workers, for example. While it’s still unclear how the wage issue will ultimately affect these industries, it’s still such a massive change that companies are looking for ways to mitigate potential decreases in profit now, before the impact is truly felt.

Finally, as mentioned above, there is the impact that COVID-19 has had and will continue to have on the way consumers interact with brands, products and services. Finding new and innovative ways to service their needs via low- and no-contact options has been a hallmark of the pandemic, and one that is likely here to stay. Self-service kiosks enable safer, simpler transactions for both customers, and employees.
