Manufacturers are Stepping Up During COVID-19

Manufacturers have been an integral part of the primary response to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the globe. Whether fabricating ventilator parts and other medical devices for healthcare as we have at EVS, or retooling lines to produce hand sanitizer, manufacturers have stepped up in every conceivable area during this challenging time.

In light of all of the non-stop negative news currently being generated by COVID-19, we wanted to take a moment to spotlight some of the positive stories coming out of manufacturing, even in a very difficult business climate.

Keen Shoes

In keeping with the original promises that the founders of KEEN made when they started the company, they have made a pledge to provide up to 100,000 pairs — about $10,000,000 worth of shoes! — to the workers on the front lines and the families at home fighting through this crisis.

Distilleries and Beer and Spirits Companies

From smaller companies like Dogfish Head brewery and Old Fourth Distillery, to adult beverage titans such as Diageo and Pernod Ricard, many have been stepping up to donate literal tons of alcohol normally used in distilling and brewing to make hand sanitizer. And they are doing it for free for those who need it most — first responders.

Textile Manufacturers and Fashion Brands

Haute couture fashion house Prada manufactured 110,000 masks and 80,000 overalls in its Montone, Italy factory for the Tuscany area. Additionally, founder Miuccia Prada and CEO Patrizio Bertelli donated two full ICU units each to three hospitals in Milan.

Clothing manufacturer and retailer Zara’s Spanish parent company, Inditex, has donated more than 300K masks and may reassign some of its textile-manufacturing lines to the production of related healthcare materials.

Consumer Packaged Goods Manufacturers

LVMH (parent company of luxury brands including Louis Vuitton) and Beiersdorf (maker of Nivea skincare), have repurposed factories to make hand sanitizers for the French government. In fact, LVMH changed over one of its factories to sanitizer production in only 72 hours!

Many more companies have come together to “do good,” not just those in manufacturing. Restaurants, hotels, airlines, entertainment and retail organizations are also doing their part during COVID-19 to support both their own employees, and those on the frontlines.
