EVS Metal is pleased to publish our latest interview spotlighting members of our metal fabrication team. We hope these help illustrate EVS’ capabilities as a manufacturer and metal fabricator, as well as the dedication our employees have to their jobs across all four of our fabrication facilities.
Q&A with Brent, Metal Fabrication Business Development Manager, EVS New Jersey
EVS Metal: Did you start in sheet metal fabrication on the shop floor, or have you always been in business development?
Brent: I started in engineering, then moved to biz dev.
EVS Metal: How long have you been with EVS, and how long have you worked in metal fab overall?
Brent: I have been at EVS since 2003 and have worked in sheet metal fabrication and CNC machining for 29 years.
EVS: Describe your career trajectory — how did you start, any specific education/training/experience, what different positions have you held etc.
Brent: I started in engineering as a co-op opportunity when I was still in college, in a job where I could receive credits toward my degree. After graduating with a degree in Design Technology from Kean University in 1994, I took a formal engineering position at another metal fabrication company in 1994.
I transitioned into estimating and sales around 1995 or so. From there, I was promoted to Director of Program Management in 1997 where I managed several large, key accounts, including Lucent Technologies, Rockwell Collins, Hewlett Packard, Ciena along with many start-up telecom companies. During this time our sales increased by more than 50%.
The company I was working for eventually became Flextronics (now FLEX) after a series of acquisitions. This was around the same time that I attended Stevens Institute of Technology and received a Graduate Certificate in Project Management with a 4.0 GPA. This was an especially rewarding time as I was working full time and able to apply what I learned immediately, given the synergies with my position in a multinational, vertically integrated contract manufacturer. I had the amazing opportunity to manage multi-million dollar projects across several North American, South American and Asian facilities within the company.
I was then promoted to Director of Sales in 2000 and our sales growth increased by another 30%. FLEX began consolidating US facilities into strategically located campuses around the country, which meant closing 31 facilities around the world. Our facility was the most profitable and the last to close. I was offered a position as a Global Account Manager, but chose to remain local in order to be closer to my family. I instead took a position at EVS Metal in 2003 as Director of Sales, and it’s been a really great 18 years since I made that decision.
